Japanese Street Scenes Calendar for 2019

This post is part of a collection on Public Domain Art.

In 1885 Takejiro Hasegawa begane producing a line of "chirimen" books, where after printing the pages were processed to be crinkled like crepe paper. The series may be best known for producing the first foreign-language translations of many Japanese fables, but a wide variety of books were produced, including calendars.

While calendars were produced for many years only one is available online via Japan's National Diet Library. However, in a bit of good luck it turns out that 1901 starts on the same day of the week as 2019, so you can use the calendar as usual.

Click here to download a zip file with the spreads for each month. I ran some basic color correction and cropped each image to A4 proportions for easy printing.

Do enjoy, and happy 2019. Ψ
