RGB to CMYK Conversion on the Command Line

This post is part of a collection on Code and Computers.

Recently I had to produce a CMYK colorspace JPEG file for printing. I hadn't done this before and while it was easy to find guides online, I was surprised how long-winded and detailed they were. Here's the process in a nutshell:

  1. Download the sRGB profile here
  2. Download the "Coated" CMYK profile here
  3. convert input-rgb.jpg +profile icm -profile sRGB_v4_ICC_preference.icc -profile JapanColor2011Coated.icc out-cmyk.jpg
